Child-safety software sells your kids' IM conversations to market-research companies

Confirming, yet again*, my belief that most companies or organizations exploiting the fears of parents are just as bad as the (usually non-existent) boogie men they purport to protect our children from.

* Yes, rationalists are capable of confirmation bias, too; however, the fact that we’re aware of it usually makes it less damaging (yeah… I know… I just went from confirmation bias to No True Scottsman and special pleading)

pink is fantastic

Yesterday a friend told us that Fisher Price makes a kid-proof digital camera, which would be awesome for Em…

But no, it’s only available in gender stereotype reinforcing blue or pink.

Assholes.

(She’ll be getting a blue one for Christmas.)

don’t deny your daughter the awesome that is pink just because men are too macho-whatever to rock it! (pink COULD be a gender neutral color, if it wasn’t for guys and their hissyfits. girls seem to have no problem enjoying blue.)

boycotting pink things isn’t going to do her any good. read her more books instead.

Did you know that the whole idea of gender associated colors is a purely 20th century concept; and that prior to WWII, the colors were blue for girls and pink for boys?

I used to think that I should ban pink and Barbie and Bratz from my daughter, until a (female) medical doctor and a woman holding a PhD in physics both told me that some of their fondest memories involved playing Barbies.

I realized that out of the millions upon millions of girls who play with “stereotyping” toys and games, there is scant actual evidence that it negatively affects them. The same idea applies to boys who play with guns… millions of boys play with them, very few become murderous monsters or criminals.

No doubt, society could use a quick kick in the ass when it comes to concepts of gender roles, but the toys and such are merely symptoms; not the problem. And, IMO, teaching our children critical thinking and literacy skills are the solution.

(FWIW, I probably would have bought the blue one, too… it’s just a nicer color)
